ARDMORE, OK -- Officials say that construction has officially started on the long-anticipated Ardmore Skate Park. Officials from Ardmore’s Parks and Recreation Department say dirt work for the new skate park finally started early this week. When the project is completed, Ardmore will have one of the three largest skate parks in Oklahoma.
The skate park will cover 16,000 square feet once it is completed. In August, officials had a difficult time finding a bidder for the project, but after three tries the company known as California Skate Parks submitted the winning bid. The project is worth about $490,000.
\"This skate park will be one that’s going to be unique. There’s only going to be a couple more in the state of Oklahoma similar in size and scope. Something very unique is what we wanted when we started this project. We didn’t want a cookie cutter project. We wanted something unique,\" Ardmore Parks and Recreation director Kevin Boatright says.
In addition to city funds, private donations also made the project possible. Park officials do not expect construction to last more than 120 days, which means the park could be finished as soon as March 2008.
